The Pilates Method
Today, Pilates, once called Contrology, is the hot new trend, but there’s a lot more to it. Created in the 1920s by Joseph H. Pilates, the method focuses on correct body alignment through neuromuscular retraining. With a series of precise movements, Pilates uses specially designed equipment to improve flexibility and strength, while heightening awareness of muscle function and control. Pilates is an effective form of exercise and rehabilitation that improves concentration, refines posture and lengthens muscle.
The Pilates method helps to restore the body’s natural balance of mobility, strength, and endurance. The system is for almost everyone - the young, elderly, athletes, pre/postnatal clients, dancers, instructors, those wishing to aid in the prevention of osteoporosis, and those wishing to aid in the relief of back pain. Essentially, the method has its place for all!
The method takes time to learn and should require Mat training first, which can be practiced anywhere! Practicing Pilates exercises for at least twenty minutes a day can improve overall health, including a better shaped body, mental endurance, back pain relief, coordination, balance and postural corrections, and one will learn how to move well every day.
With over 500 exercises to learn, it is worth the weight in gold to learn to perform each one to the best of one’s ability with control, precision and flow. Again, this takes practice! The method is considered to be body-conditioning for over-all strength and balance for the body and mind.
At our studio, we offer Private Training to begin and recommend the first group Pilates class to start with a Tower/Mat class, where one will first learn to concentrate and stabilize the body on a mat. The introduction of springs is used to deepen the practice of stabilizing the core and learning to move without tension in the body.
Classes at MYB studios are small, with no more than six participants, to make the practice of Pilates economical; however, in the long run, it is most economical to your health to learn the exercises one on one. Classes are scheduled on one apparatus, i.e., the Reformer or Tower (a consolidated version of Joseph Pilates’ Cadillac). We recommend taking at least one of each type of class weekly!
Practicing with loved ones is also a great way! Consider grabbing a friend or two and schedule a private Duet or Trio lesson!
