Mind Your Body Pilates found 2 interesting foot articles on NPR this morning. One talked about the use of orthotics, while the other reported on using shock-therapy to battle foot pain. We don’t have an opinion on either orthotics or shock-therapy for foot pain relief, but GYROKINESIS and Kundalini Yoga both use an “Awakening Series” to achieve the same result. The “Awakening Series” consists of tapping with the finger pads all over the body to bring blood to the surface and promote circulation. In addition, Mind Your Body says Pilates strengthens the feet by encouraging joint articulation and muscle tone in the lower limb. The foot-work series on the Pilates Reformer works in a prehensile foot, wrapping the toes, therefore strengthening the muscles under the foot. Doming is also an exercise that contracts and lifts the muscles under the foot, used to strengthen and help with the alignment of aging feet.
