A client here at Mind Your Body Pilates & GYROTONIC has been a loyal Pilates student for the past three years.
She commits to three classes a week and feels that Pilates has improved her general sense of self, which includes her body image. In her younger years, this client was a dancer, athlete and had which she calls, a “boyish figure”. She seems to have enjoyed this figure and misses it because it was slim and without the curves which is what she sees now when she looks in the mirror. She is very frustrated and almost disappointed by her female curves, voluptuousness and added weight. She states that the Pilates classes have helped her feel positive about her self image, and as a post-menopausal woman, she feels that Pilates movements have improved her circulation, digestion, overall health and energy. For months, I have been encouraging her to shed the over, over sized tee and try one that fits her beautiful! feminine! figure. Today, she purchased a few tees from the retail corner at Mind Your Body and she looks fabulous! I congratulate her for her courage and WOW! she looks great!! …but she didn’t need the small tee for me to know that. As her Pilates trainer, I knew how gorgeous she was under the over-sized tee.

I can’t say it any other way. Pilates is about focussed, fluid exercises designed with an intelligent order that keeps you limber and strong from the inside and out!!
Please check this article out from the PMA. And tell me how Pilates makes you feel? What has changed in your body, mind or spirit? How about your gait? Posture?
And for those who have had a negative experience or think it was not a workout, contact me. I would like to change that…. Not everyone LOVES Pilates but if you were turned off by your experience, I know that I can turn it around. Pilates is just too good to get a bad rap!
Sure, one should continue to do cardiovascular workouts such as spinning, outdoor cycling, kick boxing, running, indoor equipment, but Pilates is a must for spinal health, breath control, flexibility, balance and an all around sense of well-being. ok…..check the article. Look at Joeseph Pilates in these photos. He is in his late 60’s here…..Tell me what you think. xo gail certified PMA Pilates instructor
Why stay indoors to exercise when the temp outside is in the 60’s? I don’t know about you, but I won’t feel other people’s sweat until forced to in mid December. Join us in biking around New York’s Central Park 6 mile loop. It is invigorating! You will feel energized when finished. It is the workout while breathing in Manhattan’s freshest air available in the park around all the trees. Best of all it is FREE!! Between a few bike loops and a New York Pilates class at Mind Your Body, you will feel and look great this holiday season. Meet Tuesdays at 4:45 at the gate on 90th St and 5th Ave , entrance to central park…. just a few short blocks away from Mind Your Body Pilates.
Though we have many New York Mind Your Body Pilates clients volunteering for next week’s bike loops in Central Park, this past Tuesday was lightly attended but was great!! We rode at a moderate pace and completed one loop. Since our loops include the 110th St hills, it seemed to be somewhat of a challenge but our time was great, as I went around myself one more time and still made it home with a record time of one hour. It feels cold out there at first but is invigorating and energizing. Be sure to contact Gail directly to join us on the upcoming Tuesdays! We would love to have you. Two loops will be the goal this week.

This week’s, October 11, New York magazine speaks about New York City’s Bicycle Access Law, which comes into effect on December 11. This law requires buildings to allow riders into buildings via freight elevator and to be able to safely store bicycles. Alright!! I am thrilled to hear this, after losing one bicycle in midtown NY three years ago. I haven’t locked my bicycle outside a building since.
I own a road bike and a mountain bike, which has now been upgraded with smaller tires and is my commuter. I ride 100 miles a week on the road and have recently committed to commuting everyday to and from my Upper East Side Pilates Studio. I am so much happier riding the three short miles to and from Mind Your Body, New York City’s BEST Pilates studio, and it encourages a 15 mile ride on my way home in Central Park for the exercise. Not having the stresses of taking a New York City bus, saving the $80.00 per month and it is the fastest way yet! I encourage everyone to try it, or split it with the way you currently travel around Manhattan.
I suppose the fear in commuting by bicycle has much to do with riding in the city streets of Manhattan. There is much to be concerned with. Having been riding in the streets since I was a child, I take much of it for granted but always have my wits about me. Scott Bodin,
category 1, licensed racer of Targetraining says, “Always assume that a motorist does NOT see you. See them and make a safe move, regardless of what you think a motorists sees because he is probably looking for something bigger.” Bodin also stresses the use of a helmet. When he began riding in 1980, cyclists were only wearing helmets while racing and he calls the new required helmet laws a blessing.
New York City has added 200 miles of bike paths since 2005. There is some training involved but once you start, you will be invigorated, have your exercise built into your commute, will help New York in becoming a Greener city and who knows, maybe you will love it so much, you will become the next Supercommuter!
