THANK YOU!

As the owner of Mind Your Body Pilates & GYROTONIC, I had the pleasure of sitting at the desk this afternoon all day, as I subbed for my office assistant who was out on a vacation day.  Calling all sitters, IT workers, computer-savvy folks!! How do you do it? My body is aching and I cannot wait to move tonight.  I will head out for a 25 mile cyle in minutes…..  I am so tired from looking at the computer screen.  It is no wonder we all must do Yoga, Pilates and do loops in the park, whether you run, walk cycle or skip!!  Your shoulders, back, neck, legs etc…. must be so knotted up…..

I am happy to be escaping the office side of my Pilates studio in just minutes….  I will cycle far away over the George Washington Bridge into Pallisades Park…. Aaaah, sounds like RELIEF to me…..

What do you do to unfold your body after a long day at the desk?  Would you like some suggestions?  If I had to do this everyday, I would need 15 min Yoga/Pilates interludes every hour.

aaah, just returned from the New Age Health Spa in Neversink, NY. I go there to regain a connection to myself, practice Yoga, meditate and to eat extremely healthy. I have rediscovered Yoga in a way that I am excited to add it back to my daily life! To add to the conversations regarding Yoga and Pilates. My instructor stated that Yoga is for the nervous system, to commune with one’s self, to come into yourself. It is fine to have and set goals but she was saying almost the opposite is needed and in Yoga, it is not about reaching outward for any particular goal but to search inward.

Running a busy New York Pilates studio on manhattan’s upper east side, leaves me depleted at times and coming into myself, calming my nervous system and finding a communion with myself, all sound like just the right thing.

People always ask what the difference is between Pilates and Yoga.  Yoga is, or was, a spiritual practice first through the physical. It SEEMS that Yoga has become much more about the physical, with New York Yoga, anyway.  I will have to say, “New York City” Pilates, Joseph Pilates’ home, is a strength training program. It moves through the poses and postures. Not so much as a vinyasa in Yoga but the intention is that one exercise flows into the next and springs are used to create resistance and strength. The tension on the spring in traditional Pilates was always on the heavier side. Today, many instructors work with springs too light, in my opinion, though working up to heavier spring tension is acceptable.  This week, I focussed a lot on having students hold the position before moving the springs. The positions are Yoga-like, if not the same.  The position is where the strength and precision comes from. Try holding plank (push up position). One must be strong enough to hold the position before pushing the reformer out. It is a full body system workout.  I would love to hear from you.  What do YOU like about Pilates compared to Yoga? Or why one rather than the other?
