Having been a Pilates studio owner in New York’s Upper East Side/Carnegie Hill neighborhood, I have become fairly friendly with our local mail-carrier, who is an avid Yoga and Pilates enthusiast.  He stopped me on the street the other day and insisted that I begin a neck and shoulder relief class. “I am so tired of seeing everyone’s shoulders up to their ears and listening to colleagues at work complain of a pain in the neck!” He was speaking literally and referred two co-workers to our NYC Pilates studio. They almost immediately felt better by breathing in through the nose and exhaling through the mouth. In a restful state, the muscles of the upper chest expand and release with breath and so when you deepen breathing consciously, the muscle action deepens and releases tension. Gail Giovanniello has just become CERTIFIED with the Pilates Method Alliance!

I am proud to have taken the test. Not only am I supporting Deborah Lessen, with whom I train and who is a big deal behind the PMA, but because in fourteen years, I have come to believe and abide (mostly) by the standards the PMA has worked so diligently to set. The stars on the infomercials don’t have a clue, Mari Windsor is rather ridiculous (seen her live in action) and others are overusing the word ‘certification while under-training 100’s of people each year. Standards are needed for a well-trained, knowledgeable Pilates professional and the PMA standard is out to do just that. The manual is clear, simple and full of valuable information. It is the manual I will use for all of my teacher-training courses which will begin May 2009.

Joseph Pilates stated, “Contrology (now called Pilates) develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”  It’s no wonder Mind Your Body Pilates studio owner, Gail Giovanniello is still enjoying teaching the Pilates method after 20 years. She says that she avoids getting tired or bored because she remains a student of the technique. She is currently training with Deborah Lessen at the Green Street Studio. She has also been studying the PMA (Pilates Method Alliance) Certification Exam Study Guide and will take the exam (the first industry-wide certification exam for the Pilates method in the US), this coming Tues April 14.
